  • Description

LORD RUSSELL, THE 92-YEAR OLD BRITISH PHILOSOPHER AND NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT CAMPAIGNER TODAY (SUNDAY) CALLED ON THE WORLD'S TRADE UNIONS TO REFUSE TO HANDLE GOODS INTENDED FOR SOUTH AFRICA. THIS, HE SAID, WOULD BRING THE "TYRANNY" IN THAT COUNTRY TO AN END.

LORD RUSSELL WAS SPEAKING AT A MASS RALLY IN LONDON'S TRAFALGAR SQUARE ORGANISED BY BRITAIN'S ANTI-APARTHEID MOVEMENT IN PROTEST AT THE LIFE SENTENCES IMPOSED LAST WEEK ON EIGHT MEN IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN TREASON TRIAL.

AMONG THOSE ATTENDING THE RALLY WERE MRS GOLDBERG THE WIFE OF DENNIS GOLDBERG, THE ONLY EUROPEAN SENTENCED AT THE TRIAL (HE HAD LED THE CONGRESS OF DEMOCRATS) AND THABO MBEKI, THE SON OF ONE OF THE AFRICANS SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT.

AFTER THE RALLY MEMBERS OF BRITAIN'S "COMMITTEE OF ONE HUNDRED" ALSO STAGED A PROTEST MARCH AROUND THE SQUARE CARRYING BANNERS AND SHOUTING SLOGANS; BUT EACH TIME THEY TRIED TO APPROACH THE NEARBY SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY THEY WERE HELD OFF BY POLICE. SOME 300 POLICE FORMED A CORDON AROUND THE EMBASSY AND THERE WERE SOME ARRESTS.
