  • Description

More than 200 right-wing nationalists chanting anti-British slogans demonstrated outside the Spanish Foreign Ministry in Madrid on Monday (28 Feb) shortly before the opening of talks with British Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas-Home on the future of Gibraltar. Among the demonstrators who frequently raised their arms in the distinctive salute of the Spanish Flange, was Senor Blas Pinar a member f the leadership of General Franco's National movement....Spain's only legally-recognised political group. The crowd also chanted "Minister...resign", thought to be directed at the internationally-minded Spanish Foreign Minister, Senor Lopez Bravo. Police, some in riot gear, took 15 minutes to ease the demonstrators away from the building. Demonstrations such as this are illegal in Spain.

SYNOPSIS: Police in Madrid were called to the Foreign Ministry building on Monday as more than 200 right-wing nationalist staged a noisy demonstration against British involvement in Gibraltar. Many of the demonstrators carried banners and placards, and sang Falangist hymns. The demonstration had begun quietly but increased in enthusiasm as police numbers increased.

There were several minor scuffles between police and demonstrators. Some of the police were dressed in riot gear. No arrests were reported however.

The demonstration took place shortly before the arrival of Sir Alec Douglas-Home, Britain's Foreign Secretary, who was to begin the first of a round of talks on the future of Gibraltar with his Spanish counterpart, Senor Lopez Bravo. As the time approached, police tried to disperse the demonstrators.

There were calls for the resignation of Senor Bravo whose policy has been to encourage international contracts.

The police were able to disperse the demonstrators slowly along the street after 15 minutes of protest.
