  • Description

THE STAFF OF THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC AND ALGERIAN EMBASSIES IN LEOPOLDVILLE LEFT THE CONGOLESE CAPITAL YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) FOR BRAZZAVILLE, ACROSS THE CONGO RIVER.

BOTH EMBASSIES HAD BEEN "LOCKED UP" AND RINSED BY TROOPS FOLLOWING THE DETENTION IN CAIRO OF M. MOISE TSHOMBE, THE CONGOLESE PRIME MINISTER, WHO WAS HOPING TO ATTEND THE NON-ALIGNED CONFERENCE.

THE TWO-DAY "SIEGE" WAS ENDED AS A REPORTED PRE-CONDITION TO THE FREEING OF M. TSHOMBE (WHO LEFT CAIRO TODAY FOR PARIS).

THE U.A.R. AMBASSADOR, MOHAMMED IBRAHIM KAMEL, SAID BEFORE BOARDING THE RIVER FERRY THAT HE REGARDED THE CLOSURE OF THE EMBASSY AS "TEMPORARY". HE WOULD REMAIN IN BRAZZAVILLE, CAPITAL OF THE NEIGHBOURING CONGOLESE REPUBLIC, UNTIL FURTHER ORDERS FROM CAIRO.

THE DIPLOMATS AND THEIR WIVES WERE ESCORTED TO THE DOCKSIDE BY CONGOLESE TROOPS AND NIGERIAN POLICEMEN OF THE UNITED NATIONS.

THE ALGERIAN AMBASSADOR, M. ADJALI ABDELHAMID, AND HIS U.A.R. COUNTERPART WERE SEEN OFF BY THE CONGOLESE JUSTICE MINISTER, M. EBOSIRI, WHO IS HEADING THE GOVERNMENT IN M. TSHOMBE'S ABSENCE,T HE MAYOR OF LEOPOLDVILLE, AND THE CHIEF OF THE UNITED NATIONS MISSION.

(REPORTS FROM LEOPOLDVILLE SAID THAT THE SAILING OF THE ALGERIAN EMBASSY WAS PARTLY DUE TO PRESIDENT BEN BELLA'S MORAL SUPPORT OF THE REBEL STANLEVILLE REGIME).
