  • Description

About 100 refugee families are being moved out of the Gaza Strip's largest refugee camp to make way for roadways and enlarged homes for the remaining refugees.

Earthmoving machines are already cutting the roadways through the settlement and families that are staying are using the bricks from the demolished buildings to enlarge their homes.

The displaced refugees are being put into newly constructed suburbs nearby.

The government programme, carried out by the Israeli defence ministry, is to be extended eventually to all Gaza Strip camps. The 'thinning out' of camp is meant to improve the lot of the 40,000 people now living at Rafah and to improve security by providing open area which hamper infiltration and terrorism.

SYNOPSIS: The largest refugee camp in the occupied Gaza Strip is getting a facelift which will cut the camp population by half. Earthmovers are now cutting new roads through the Rafah camp and....in their path....homes for about 100 families are being demolished. The displaced families are being moved into new housing in a nearby suburb.

Refugees staying in the camp are taking bricks from demolished house to enlarge their own houses. Israeli government co-ordinators for the project say this is part of the plan to improve the living conditions for all the camp inhabitants. The new homes for the displaced families have twice as many rooms and remaining families get more space.

The work of Rafah is expected to be extended eventually to all of Gaza's 350,000 refugees. Besides improving their living conditions, the changes are also meant to cut down on infiltration and terrorism by opening up the camps.
