St. Clement Danes, the tiny church in the centre of the Strand, London, made famous?

  • Description

St. Clement Danes, the tiny church in the centre of the Strand, London, made famous by the nursery rhyme, "Oranges and Lemons," was the June 20 setting for London's wedding of the year." Hundreds of police controlled rush-hour traffic as wealthy banker's daughter, Henrietta Tiarks, arrived - six minutes late -to become the wife of the Marquis of Tavistock, the son and heir of the Duke of Bedford.

The bride, a former "debutante of the year," wore a snow white gown, designed in Paris by Nina Ricci. And as she waited to enter the church on the arm of her father, Rene, Princes Margaret's hairdresser, who has looked after the bride's hair since she was a schoolgirl, arranged the bride's veil with its ten yards of bouffant tulle.

There were six bridesmaids led by Catrine Milinair, the 18 year old daughter of the Duchess of Bedford, Agnes Milinair, aged 14, Countess Burny Esterhazy, Alessandra and Virginia Mavroleon, grand-daughters of Greek shipping millionaire, Mr. Basil Mavrolean, and the bride's second cousin, Miss Arabella Sweetman.

As the couple, both aged 21, and childhood friends, left for Claridge's hotel, seven chartered buses arrived to take some of the 800 guests to the reception.

The Marquis and his new Marchioness will live in America for the first year of their married life - the Marquis is a student at Harvard University. Their honeymoon? "just roaming around for three months in the Caribbean".
