  • Description

PRESIDENTIAL AND GENERAL ELECTIONS IN TUNISIA ARE DUE TO HE HELD TOMORROW (NOVEMBER 2). VICE-PRESIDENT BAHI LADGHAM ADDRESSED ONE LECTION MEETING, HELD IN A TUNIS LABOUR EXCHANGE, LAST THURSDAY (OCTOBER 30).

PRESIDENT HABIB BOURGUIBA HAS BEEN ACCEPTED AS CANDIDATE FOR A THIRD TERM AS TUNISIA'S HEAD OF STATE. THE NEW PRESIDENTIAL TERM IS TO RUN FOR FIVE YEARS FROM NOVEMBER 9TH THIS YEAR.

THE RULING DESTOURIAN SOCIALIST PARTY -- THE COUNTRY'S ONLY PARTY ON WHICH MR. LADGHAM SERVES AS SECRETARY-GENERAL -- HAS NAMED 101 CANDIDATES FOR THE GENERAL ELECTIONS. THEY WILL BE STANDING FOR 101 SEATS IN 35 CONSTITUENCIES.

AMONG THE CANDIDATES ARE THREE WOMEN -- TWO MORE THAN THE LAST ELECTION -- AND THREE TUNISIAN AMBASSADORS.

THE ONLY NOTE OF DISCORD DURING THE ELECTION PRELIMINARIES CAME WHEN FORMER DEFENCE MINISTER AHMED MESTIRI CALLED FOR VOTING TO BE POSTPONED UNTIL PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA HAD RECOVERED FROM ILL-HEALTH.

HIS THREAT TO STAND AS AN OPPOSITION PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE AROUSED BITTER CRITICISM. AND IN THE EVENT, PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA'S NAME WAS THE ONLY ONE SUBMITTED TO A SPECIAL COMMISSION SET UP TO EXAMINE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES.
