  • Description

JAPAN'S LEFT-WING OPPOSITION STEPPED UP DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST THE JAPAN-SOUTH KOREA FRIENDSHIP TREATY YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) AFTER THE RULING LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY CUT SHORT DEBATE ON RATIFICATION. SOME 40 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED DURING THE DEMONSTRATIONS -- WHICH DEVELOPED INTO SCUFFLES WITH THE POLICE -- ORGANISED BY THE SOCIALIST PARTY, THE TRADE UNIONS AND THE COMMUNIST PARTY.

TWO GIANT DEMONSTRATIONS WERE MOUNTED IN THE JAPANESE CAPITAL YESTERDAY. AN ESTIMATED 12,000 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE AFTERNOON PROTEST, WHILE IN THE EVENING THE TURN OUT NUMBERED AROUND 20,000.

THE LEFT-WING OPPOSITION HAD ATTACKED THE GOVERNMENTS' PARTY'S CLOSURE VOTE IN COMMITTEE ON THE RATIFICATION PROCEDURE AS AN ILLEGAL AND FASCIST MOVE. THE SESSION BROKE UP IN UPROAR, AND SCUFFLES DEVELOPED BETWEEN GOVERNMENT SUPPORTERS AND SOCIALIST DEPUTIES AFTER THE COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN DECLARED THE VOTE CARRIED.

(THE OPPOSITION HAS BEEN HOPING TO MOUNT A PROTEST CAMPAIGN ON THE SCALE OF THE 1960 DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST THE U.S. - JAPAN SECURITY TREATY. THEN THEY FORCED THE RESIGNATION OF PRIME MINISTER KISHI AND THE CANCELLATION OF A VISIT TO JAPAN BY PRESIDENT EISENHOWER. SO FAR HOWEVER, THE CURRENT DEMONSTRATION CAMPAIGN HAS FAILED TO ATTRACT COMPARABLE SUPPORT -- DESPITE IMPRESSIVE TURN OUT FOR YESTERDAY'S DEMONSTRATIONS.)
(THE TREATY, WHICH HAS ALREADY BEEN RATIFIED BY SOUTH KOREA, ESTABLISHED NORMAL RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.)
