  • Description

The result of an all-day Summit Meeting on Saturday between leaders from Gabon, Congo Brazzaville, Central African Republic and Chad was a decision to end the General secretariat of the Four-Nation Union.

The decision to end the ailing II-year-old organisation comes after the failure to run the four countries' economic affairs on a communal basis.

However the delegates -- Central African Republic's President Jean Bedel Bokassa, Congo Brazzaville's Major Marien Ngouabi, Gabon's President Albert Bernard Bongo, and Chad's Co-ordination Minister Antoine Bangui -- agreed to retain their cultural, economic and financial links.

September has been set as the deadline for closure of the General Secretariat.

The late arrival of President Bokassa put back the start of the talks one day. No reason was given for his absence.
