Background: The cathedral of the city of Pecs, Hungary, has been completely renovated in the last few years and recently its famous organ was completely rebuilt.
Parts of the church are reminiscent of Roman styling. The cathedral was rebuilt in 1891. At the same time the church organ was built by the Hungarian firm of Angster and installed in the cathedral.
Over the last few years, the Hungarian government has helped to finance an entire renovation of the cathedral including the restoration of valuable frescos.
The organ was also rebuilt -- a task which took two years. The work included changing old and worn out components, increasing the range of notes, introducing electronic controls and almost doubling the number of organ pipes to bring the total to nearly 5500.
The cathedral of Pecs is not only the scene of church ceremonies but also of concerts.
SYNOPSIS: The famous cathedral in the Hungarian city of Pecs. Recent renovations financed by the government have restored the cathedral to its former glory. The splendid church organ -- built by the firm of Anster last century -- was rebuilt. The task took two years but now the church can be used not only for ceremonies but also for concerts.
The work on the organ included replacing worn out parts and increasing the range of notes. Part of the organ is now electronically controlled and the number of pipes have almost been doubled to make a total of nearly five and a half thousand. The organ is one of the newer parts of the cathedral which dates back to more than a thousand years.
Parts of the cathedral are reminiscent of Roman styling. It is regarded as one of the most remarkable works of Hungarian neo-baroque architecture.
The renovations took several years to complete. They were the first major work done to the cathedral since much of it was rebuilt in 1891. The work involved the restoration of many beautiful and valuable frescos, including a nativity scene by Karoly Lotz.
