  • Description

Battle scarred Beirut spent its quietest night in a week on Thursday (30 October) as the latest ceasefire between warring political factions appeared to be holding.

The situation was claimed by stormy weather in the capital which seems to have caused a lull in the fighting. Thunderstorms during the night are believed to have helped prolong the fragile peace by driving gunmen into shelter.

Beirut radio said on Friday (31 October) that gunfire in the city's suburbs died down around midnight and since then the capital were unsafe, apart from one coastal highway and even this road was blocked beyond the airport.

However there was resumption of fighting in the central town of Zahle after a brief overnight lull. The area os Name, Haret Name and Damour, south of Beirut on the Sidon Highway saw violent battles all day on Thursday, which cut off the road between the capital and the south.
