  • Description

Although the correct date of Algeria's independence from France is the 2nd of July, the celebrations are put off until the 5th to coincide with the date of the first French landing in the country in 1830.

This year the celebrations followed the pattern of the last nine years -- parades, horsemen, and a broadcast from President Houari Boumedienne. Another emphasis this year was placed on the nation's youth -- they took part in all the parades and in some of the cultural displays put on for the watching crowds and officials.

SYNOPSIS: M. Kaid Ahmed and President Houari Boumedienne were among the many official guests present at the parades and displays to mark Algeria's ninth anniversary of independence on Monday.

The national horsemen, a regular feature of the anniversary celebrations, were among the thrilling events put on for the entertainment of the crowds.

Although the official date of Algeria's independence from France is the 2nd of July, the celebrations take place on the 5th in order to coincide with the date of the first French landing in the country in 1830.

Another regular feature of the independence celebrations in Algeria are the youth parades. Over 3,000 youths took part this year in the displays of gymnastics and cultural theatres exhibitions. Algeria demonstrates every year the importance it places on its youth for the future.
