  • Description

An unusual beauty-and-body contest for both men and women was staged at the Intercontinental Hotel, Lusaka, on Saturday (August 4) as part of the city's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Rather than segregate the sexes -- as is common in events of this kind -- the organisers arranged to accommodate both in one evening.

The first item on the agenda was the Mr. Physique competition, in which male entrants were judged by the size and power of their muscles. The winner of the body-builders' award was Chris Ellis of Lusaka.

Then it was the ladies' turn---when girls from various parts of Zambia competed for the title, Miss. Lusaka 1973. They were judged on looks, personality, elegance and skills and in this last category the entries ranged from poetry-reading to modern and traditional dancing. The title was won by 19-year-old Miss. Rozanne Leanet Sayer, a student from Lusaka. Apart from her trophy, she won a short holiday in Zambia and a chance to take part in October's Miss. Independence Contest.

The Miss. Lusaka Pageant was organised by top Zambian model Mrs. Joy Old who aims to promote natural Zambian beauty and to encourage the girls of the country to take care of their looks. Miss. Sayer now hopes to pursue a modelling career in London.
