  • Description

French President Georges Pompidou returns to Paris on Friday (28 January), after his four-day two-nation African tour, which took him to Niger and Chad.

In a speech to Niger's National Assembly in Niamey on Wednesday, President Pompidou pledged that France would press for a fairer deal for developing countries during negotiations on reforming world trade patterns. He also said that a one-part political system--such as that in Niger--could be a viable and efficient way of assuring the stability necessary for economic development in African countries. During his two-day stay in Niger, Mr. Pompidou conferred on cooperation and aid problems with Niger's President Hamanai Diori.

In Chad, President Pompidou said that the country had emerged from its recent internal troubles and pledged continuing French aid to the West African state. French troops have helped President Francois Tombalbaye's government put down a rebellion by tribesman in remote northern areas. About 2,000 French troops are still based in Chad.

President Pompidou was warmly received in both countries. The two-nation tour is part of President Pompidou's alan to visit as many of France's former black african territories as possible before his current mandate expires in 1976.
