    The second day of the celebrations in Dakar to mark one year of independence in Senegal began, April 4, with a 101 gun salute. An hour later, President Senghor addressed his people in the square near the main post office. Then came a big military parade in the Boulevard de la Liberation.

    Those taking part had to be assembled more than an hour beforehand. Behind the big parade, were groups of women athlete, women in national dress, representatives of many organisations and workers.

    The previous day, a commemorative plaque was unveiled in Dakar amid scenes of jubilation. Many visiting statement have been attending the celebrations. Politically, Senegal remains in the French community; and is economically dependent on France.
