TRANSCRIPT: BARTCH: SEQ 2: "LET ME EMPHASISE THAT AS A STRICTLY PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE FOR THE PROTECTION OF U.S. CITIZENS SOME UNITED STATES NAVAL UNITS HAVE BEEN SENT IN THE DIRECTION OF TRINIDAD. THERE HAVE BEEN SOME DISTURBANCES IN PORT OF SPAIN, THE CAPITAL, AND WE ARE INFORMED THAT A PORTION OF THE 600 MAN TRINIDADIAN MILITARY FORCES HAS MUTINIED. THEREFORE IN VIEW OF THE PRESENCE OF MORE THAN A THOUSAND AMERICAN CITIZENS RESIDENT IN TRINIDAD, TOGETHER WITH AN UNKNOWN NUMBER OF AMERICAN TOURISTS, WE BELIEVE IT DESIRABLE TO BE PREPARED FOR EVACUATION IF THE SITUATION SHOULD REQUIRE. I WANT TO REPEAT THAT THESE PREPARATIONS ARE STRICTLY PRECAUTIONARY AND TAKEN ONLY IN PREPARATION FOR POSSIBLE EVACUATION OF AMERICAN CITIZENS. THE GOVERNMENT AT TRINIDAD HAS REPORTED THAT IT HAS THE SITUATION UNDER CONTROL. BUT IT KNOWS OF OUR PRECAUTIONS AND APPROVES OF THEM. WE KNOWN OF NO IMMEDIATE DANGER TO AMERICAN CITIZENS.

QUESTION: MR. BARTCH ARE THERE ANY PLANS FOR LANDING AMERICAN TROOPS IN TRINIDAD?

BARTCH: NO THERE ARE NOT. WE'RE SENDING NAVAL UNITS IN THAT DIRECTION BUT THERE ARE NO PLANS TO LAND TROOPS THERE AT THE PRESENT TIME.
