In one of the most incident-packed games in the history of international rugby on Saturday (17 June), the touring French Rugby Union team snatched a sensational last-minute try to draw their First Test with Australia, 14-all. The game was punctuated by frequent brawling among the players....two players were taken off on stretchers.....and even the touch judges were jostled and punched.

SYNOPSIS: At the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday the touring French Rugby side met Australia in the first of a series of international test matches. This Australian move during the second half, resulted in a try by winger John Taylor.

Earlier, Australia had opened the scoring with a penalty goal and a try, but the Frenchmen...seen here defending on the right....had came back strongly with tries by Lux and Saisset to lead 10-7 at half-time.

Fourteen minutes into the second-half Fairfax brought the Australians level with a penalty goal, followed shortly afterwards by Taylor's try. There were many scrappy lineouts during the game with neither side winning a clear advantage.

The game was full of incident. Brawling among the players punctuated the play. The casualties included two Australians taken off the field on stretchers.

The referee experienced great difficulty in controlling the game without frequent interruptions for rough play. Even the touch judges didn't escape jostling by the players.

The scene was to stay at 14-10, in favour of Australia, until a last-minute controversial try by Jean-Pierra Lux which wasn't converted. Sports writers have referred to the game as one of the most savage international rugby fixtures on record.
