  • Description

WITH MORE THAN 800,000 CARS POURING INTO MANHATTEN EACH DAY THIS WEEK, MOTORISTS IN STRIKE-BOUND NEW YORK HAVE SUFFERED BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC JAMS AT THE CITY'S ENTRANCES AND EXITS. THEY WERE CHEERED TODAY (THURSDAY) TO LEARN THAT CITY AUTHORITIES AND UNION LEADERS HAVE ACCEPTED PROPOSALS TO END THE CRIPPLING TRANSPORT STRIKE.

THE PEACE PLAN, UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED BY UNION NEGOTIATORS, HAD TO BE APPROVED BY THE UNION BOARD AND RATIFIED BY THE MEMBERSHIP.

CITY OFFICIALS ESTIMATED THAT THE STRIKE HAD COST THE CITY 130,000 MILLION DOLLARS (ABOUT 46,420 MILLION STERLING) IN ITS FIRST 12 DAYS.

THOUSANDS OF SMALL SHOPKEEPERS IN MANHATTEN WERE HARDEST HIT. SOME DECLARED THEY WERE FACING BANKRUPTCY. IN THE FIRST THREE DAYS THEY WERE OFFERED, MORE THAN 1,000 BUSINESSMEN APPLIED FOR EMERGENCY LOANS OF UP TO 14,000 DOLLARS (ABOUT GBP5,000 STERLING) THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MADE AVAILABLE.

DRIVERS WERE SAID TO BE GIVING PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT TO YOUNG GIRL PEDESTRIANS OVER MALES. ELDERLY WOMEN HAVE TAKEN TO RAPPING ON CAR WINDOWS DEMANDING THAT DRIVERS GIVE THEM A LIFT AND HUNDRED OF EXASPERATED MOTORISTS HAVE BEEN ILLEGALLY PARKING ALONG THE KERBS IN DOWNTOWN STREETS.
