  • Description

MOTOCROSS - JEFF SMITH, 29-YEAR-OLD B.S.A. WORKS RIDER, LED BRITAIN TO VICTORY IN THE EIGHT-COUNTRY MOTO-CROSS DES NATIONS AT HAWKSTONE PARK, ENGLAND, TODAY (SUNDAY). BELGIUM WERE SECOND AND HOLLAND THIRD.

THE STRONGEST CHALLENGE TO BRITAIN'S SUPREMACY - WHICH HAS NOW WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP 12 TIMES SINCE 1947 - WAS EXPECTED TO COME FROM SWEDEN, WHOSE TEAM INCLUDED THE REIGNING WORLD SCRAMBLE CHAMPION, ROLD TIBBLIN.

THE SWEDISH TEAM RAN INTO TROUBLE BEFORE THE FIRST OF THE TWO LEGS GOT UNDER WAY. BILL NILSSON INJURED A SHOULDER AND DROPPED OUT AFTER A COLLISION WITH ANOTHER RIDER IN THE SECOND OF THREE FALSE STARTS.

TIBBLIN WRESTED THE LEAD FROM THE BRITISH RIDERS, BUT HAD TO DROP OUT AFTER NINE OF THE 15 LAPS WITH A BROKEN BRAKE ROD. THE MAIN THREAT TO SMITH IN THE LATER STAGES OF THE RACE CAME FROM HOLLAND'S BROER DIRKX, AND THE BRILLIANT BELGIAN RIDER SYLVAIN GEBOERS.

THE BELGIAN'S DETERMINED CHALLENGE DID NOT QUITE PAY OFF AND HE FINISHED SECOND, 50 YARDS BEHIND SMITH.

    TEAM PLACINGS: 1 BRITAIN, 18 POINTS; 2 BELGIUM, 35; 3 HOLLAND, 90; 4 SWITZERLAND, 100; 5 FRANCE, 103; 6 DENMARK, 104; 7 CANADA, 180. SWEDEN FAILED TO FINISH.
