  • Description

SOVIET COSMONAUT VLADIMIR KOMAROV WAS MOURNED BY A STUNNED NATION TODAY (TUESDAY) AS INVESTIGATORS WORKED TO FIND THE CAUSE OF YESTERDAY'S ACCIDENT WHICH CLAIMED HIS LIFE. IN MOSCOW, THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE STOOD IN LINE TO PAY HOMAGE TO HIS MEMORY IN THE RED BANNER HALL OF THE CENTRAL ARMY HOUSE.

THROUGHOUT THIS AFTERNOON A SILENT PROCESSION MOVED PAST THE SIMPLE FLOWER-BACKED URN CONTAINING THE ASHES OF THE 40-YEAR-OLD COSMONAUT, THE FIRST MAN TO DIE ON A SPACE MISSION. THEY WERE LED BY THE PRIME MINISTER, ALEXEI KOSYGIN, PRESIDENT NIKOLAI PODGORNY, AND OTHER SOVIET LEADERS.

MANY RUSSIANS, SOME OF THEM WEEPING OPENLY, QUEUED FOR THREE HOURS FOR A QUICK GLIMPSE OF THE URN CONTAINING KOMAROV'S ASHES. IN THE FLAG-DRAPED HALL, A MILITARY BAND PLAYED SOLEMN MUSIC, AND SOLDIERS WITH FIXED BAYONETS STOOD GUARD OVER THE BIER.

MR KOSYGIN, OTHER SOVIET LEADERS, AND SEVEN OF KOMAROV'S 10 FELLOW COSMONAUTS -- INCLUDING THE FIRST MAN TO GO INTO SPACE, YURI GAGARIN -- TOOK TURNS TO STAND FOR SEVERAL MINUTES IN AN HONOUR GUARD.

KOMAROV, THE OLDEST MAN EVER TO FLY IN SPACE, AND A VETERAN TEST PILOT, HAS BEEN POSTHUMOUSLY AWARDED THE GOLD STAR MEDAL. TOMORROW HE WILL BE GIVEN A STATE FUNERAL, WHEN THE URN CONTAINING HIS ASHES WILL BE IMMURED IN THE KREMLIN WALL IN RED SQUARE, WHERE CIVILIAN AND MILITARY HEROES OF THE STATE HAVE BEEN BURIED FOR THE PAST 50 YEARS.

A GOVERNMENT INVESTIGATION IS UNDER WAY TO FIND HOW THE ACCIDENT KILLING KOMAROV OCCURRED. THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT SAID THAT THE CORDS OF THE PARACHUTE, SLOWING THE SPACESHIP'S FALL, BECAME TANGLED FOUR MILES (SEVEN KM) ABOVE THE EARTH, AND IT PLUMMETED DOWN TO THE GROUND.
