    A twin - engine airliner filled with holiday travellers, plunged into the sea 200 metres off Mar del Plata, on January 16, 1959.-
    All persons on board - but one, miraculously saved - have perished in the crash.-
    According to reports reaching Buenos Aires, the plane asked permission to make an emergency landing at Mar del Plata Airport.-
    It was an Austral Airlines Curtis 46, on a scheduled flight from Buenos Aires to Mar del Plata and Bahia Blanca.-
    Witnesses indicated the cause of the crash was engine failure.- Some reported hearing the motors cut off as the plane flew low overhead toward the ocean.-
    It fell into the sea off the Camet Par area, about four and one half miles from the city centre of the crowded beach resort.-
    On board were 47 passengers, including one child, and a crew of five.-
    Shortly after the accident a team of frog men and all Mar del Plata Maritime police were ordered into action at the crash site.-
    A wing tipe, illuminated by the searchlights, was the only part of the plane itself visible to watchers on the shore.-
