  • Description

The French Prime Minister, Mr, Raymond Barre, who's almost completed a five-day visit to China, says he's found a similarity of views on international matters between the two countries during his talks with Chinese leaders. And during the visit, it's also been announced that Chinese Communist Party Chairman, Huakuo-Feng, has accepted an invitation to visit France.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Barre's visit included a meeting with Chairman Hua in Peking. It was during this meeting that the French Prime Minister extended an invitation to the Chairman from President Giscard d'Estaing to visit France, an invitation Chairman Hua accepted. During their meeting, the two men discussed the development of Sino-French relations and international issues of common concern.

Chairman Hua was later quoted by Radio Peking as saving that Mr. Barre's talks had been "very satisfactory"...and that the French Prime Minister's visit would make a contribution to the development of friendship and co-operation between the two countries.

The bulk of the two-day official side of Mr. Barre's visit was made up of talks with Vice-premier Teng Hsiao-ping ending with the traditional photograph of leaders and officials from both sides...and the signing of technical and scientific co-operation agreements which covered projects and studies the two countries had in common, including research into animal genetics, medicinal herbs, computer equipment, telecommunications, and geological explorations. The Chinese described the agreement as covering not three or five years, but several decades.

According to Mr. Barre, the agreement was one that had "a profound significance". The agreement was also the first of its kind to be signed between China and any Western country.

After the talks ended, Mr. Barre was host at a banquet in Peking's Great Hall of the People attended by Vice-Premier Teng hsiao-Ping, The banquet signalled the end of the formal visit.

Later, the Prime Minister and Mme Barre made a dramatic departure from the capital for an 11-hour train journey to north-east China where they were to see a giant petro-chemical complex being built by French companies.
