Background: Police arrested nearly seven thousand demonstrators in Washington on Monday (3 May). Crowds of young anti-war demonstrators, estimated to total nearly 20,000, attempted a six-hour campaign to snarl traffic and paralyse the Federal Government.

The City police, who were backed by several thousand Federal troops, used tear gas, chemical sprays and their clubs to frustrate guerrilla-warfare tactics by the demonstrators. Police Chief Jerry Wilson announced the arrest figure--believed to be the largest total for a single day in the capital's history.

Some drivers were understandably irate over the tactics used by the demonstrators. This film shows drivers who, halted by rolling rubbish cans, attempted to clear the way for their cars. A National Broadcasting Company cameraman recorded the scene, much to the anger of one driver who knocked him down.
