On April 24, two days before the Algerian revolt collapsed, the four leaders of the rebellion: Generals Challe, Salan, Zeller and Jouhaud, addressed a mass meeting of 10,000 in the Forum in Algiers.

General Challe called on the vast crowd of settlers to "be ready to die, suffer if need be, so that Algeria stays French".

In his address, General Salan - who escaped police surveillance in Spain to reach Algiers - said: "We will stay with you till victory". He said: "Here we are, once more, in this square where together we took the oath to keep Algeria French. All four of us, in spite of the snares set for us, have succeeded i reaching, you, and we shall stay with you right to the end, to the victory we promised here - and this time we shall achieve it".

But victory was not to be, and on April 26 President de Gaulle announced to the world that General Challe had surrendered and that the rebellion was over. The General was flown to France and imprisoned in the Sante Prison in Paris, on charges of high treason and mutiny. The other members of the junta are still free. Warrants have been issued for their arrest, and a water is being kept for them at ports and airfields.
