  • Description

THE TURMOIL IN CAMBODIA SO FAR HAS BEEN CONFINED TO THE SOUTH-EAST CORNER OF THE EMBATTLED COUNTRY. BUT THE EFFECTS HAVE SPREAD FAR AND WIDE. THE SHOCK WAVES HAVE PENETRATED THE PEACE AND SERENITY OF THE AREA AROUND THE VAST INLAND SEA KNOWN AS THE TONLE SAP, 150 MILES NORTH-WEST OF PHNOM PENH.

IT IS HERE, JUST OUTSIDE THE TOWN OF SIEM REAP, THAT ONE OF THE GREATEST INDO-CHINESE WORKERS IS TO BE FOUND: THE TEMPLES OF ANGKOR VAT, A MONUMENT OF THE KHMER CIVILISATION 800 YEARS AGO.

NORMALLY THE RUINS ARE THRONGED WITH VISITORS. NOW, BECAUSE OF THE FIGHTING BETWEEN CAMBODIAN AND VIETNAMESE, ONLY A FEW AMERICANS ARE TO BE FOUND. JAPANESE TOURISTS, WHO POURED IN BY THE SCORE EACH DAY, NOW BY-PASS CAMBODIA ON THEIR SOUTH-EAST ASIAN TRAVELS.

THE EXQUISITE TEMPLE CARVINGS SERVE AS A REMINDER OF THE BATTLES OF CENTURIES AGO FOUGHT OVER ETHNIC DIFFERENCES IN INDO-CHINA. THE VISITOR CAN SEE ANCIENT CAMBODIANS VANQUISHING THE FORERUNNERS OF THE MODERN VIETNAMESE AND OTHER INVADERS, ALTHOUGH HISTORY WAS LATER TO TELL A DIFFERENT STORY.

THE CENTURIES-OLD HOSTILITY BETWEEN THE CAMBODIANS AND VIETNAMESE WAS A LATENT FORCE LONG BEFORE THE CURRENT TROUBLE BEGAN, BUT RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO PEOPLES IN THE TONLE SAP AREA HAVE ALWAYS BEEN EQUABLE.

UNLIKE SOME PARTS OF CAMBODIA WHERE THE VIETNAMESE HAVE CORNERED THE COMMERCE AND TAKEN A GRIP ON THE ECONOMY, THE TWO PEOPLES HERE HAVE SHARED THEIR POVERTY AND UNDER-DEVELOPMENT.

MOST OF THE VIETNAMESE HAVE MADE A MEAGRE LIVING FROM FISHING IN THE PLACID WATERS OF THE TONLE SAP. NOW THE NEW CAMBODIAN REGIME HAS STOPPED THEM AS PART OF THE ANTI-VIETNAMESE CAMPAIGN. THE FISHING FOLK WHO HAVE LIVED IN CAMBODIA FOR DECADES ARE TOLD IT IS NOT THEIR COUNTRY AND THEY MUST GO. BUT THEY CANNOT GO AS THEY HAVE NO MONEY. AND THEY NOW LIVE IN FEAR OF THE REPORTS OF MASS KILLINGS FROM OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.

THE BAN OF VIETNAMESE FISHING HAS PARTLY BACK-FIRED ON THE GOVERNMENT. IT WAS CREATED A SEVERE SHORTAGE OF ONE OF THE COUNTRY'S PRINCIPAL AND CHEAPEST FOODS WITH THE RESULT THAT PRICES HAVE SOARED.
