Background: The British show jumper John Greenwood on 'Mr. Punch', won the Dunhill Mistletoe Stakes at Olympic stadium in London, U.K., on Friday (December 22nd), against a strong European field. Although his rounds were slow, they were completely without faults.

The race took place on the third day of the second Dunhill International Show Jumping Championships. Among those in the six-horse jump-off was the Swiss rider, Walter Gabathuler, who'd come second in the European Trophy the previous day, and the German rider Alwin Schocklemonhle, who won four major Dunhill trophies last year.

The German rider, Hans Steenken, came second in the Mistletoe Stakes. He went round nearly eight seconds faster than Greenwood, but knocked the last fence down.

Greenwood, who won 'GBP' 300 (700 U.S. dollars) in prize money, said "Mr. Punch" had earned him more than 'GBP' 3000 (7000 U.S. dollars) this year.

SYNOPSIS: The British rider John Greenwood on "Mr. Punch", was one of six European show jumpers in the jump off at the end of the Dunhill Mistletoe Trophy, at Olympia, stadium in London on Friday. It was one of the final events in the Dunhill International Show Jumping Championships. Greenwood deliberately went round in the relatively slow time of forty two seconds, but he was completely clear of faults.

The Swiss Rider Walter Gabathuler was on "Jack Folly", which he'd ridden to second place in the previous day's Dunhill European Trophy.

There was three hundred pounds in prize money for the winner.

Another competitor was Edgar Cuepper from Belgium riding "Le Champion'. Cuepper has had a highly successful season, and took a large part in the Dunhill Championships.

Signor G. Angioni from Italy rode 'Puckoon'. He's not yet acquired the fame of two other Italian competitors -- Olympic Gold Medallist Granzio Mancinelli, and Piero d'Inzeo -- but he acquitted himself well.

The German rider Alwin Schocklemonhle on 'The Robber' won four major events in the first International Championships at Olympia last year. He was not prominent in the Mistletoe. But his team-mate, Hartwig Steenken, did the fastest time of thirty three seconds.

Greenwood's faultless round was enough to bring him victory and an extra seasonal treat.

He said that "Mr. Punch" had won three thousand pounds in prize money this year.
