    THE SWEDISH BROTHERS, GOSTA AND TOMAS PETTERSSON, TOOK FIRST AND SECOND PLACES IN THE OPENING STAGE OF THE 1,444 MILE (2,324 KMS) "TOUR OF BRITAIN" CYCLE RACE TODAY (SUNDAY). THE FIRST LEG WAS RACED OVER 105 MILES (169 KMS) FROM BRIGHTON TO SWINDON IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND.

    THE RACE WAS STARTED BY THE BRITISH HOME SECRETARY, MR. JAMES CALLAGHAN. MR. CALLAGHAN AMUSED SPECTATORS BY MOUNTING ONE OF THE BIKES AND THEN CYCLING THROUGH THE CROWD.

    THE SWEDES DID EXCEPTIONALLY WELL AS TWO OTHER PETTERSSON BROTHERS, ERIK AND STURE, FINISHED IN THE FIRST EIGHT. BRITAIN'S LES WEST, WHO HAS WON TWO OF THE LAST THREE TOUR OF BRITAIN RACES, FINISHED THIRD IN TODAY'S LEG. GOSTA PETTERSSON COVERED THE DISTANCE IN THREE HOURS 52 MINUTES 2 SECONDS. TEAM PLACING ARE: SWEDEN 1; BRITAIN 2; BRITISH REGIONS 3; POLAND AND U.S.S.R. EQUAL 4; HOLLAND 6.
