The President of Nigeria, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, left Lagos on Saturday to fly to London where he is to undergo medical treatment.

The Nigeria Parliament did not sit on Saturday as all Federal Minister and MP's had been asked to be at the Lagos Airport to say goodbye to the President.

The 60 year old Head of State passed between lines of armed police as he drove to the airport through the troubled outskirts of Lagos, parts of which lis within the Western Region where violence and arson followed the recent disputed elections. The small crowds who had gathered to see him off chanted their traditional salute of "Zik, Zik" to the President as he passed by.

The President, who was seen off by the Nigerian Prime Minister, Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, was accompanied by two Nigerian doctors. He has been ill for some time but the nature of his illness has not yet been disclosed.
