    VETERANS OF THE FIRST AND SECOND WORLD WARS WERE HONOURED BY GREEK FORCES IN ATHENS YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) WHEN THEY LAID A WREATH ON THE ATHENS WAR MEMORIAL.THE 300 OLD SOLDIERS WERE MEMBERS OF THE "PILGRIMAGE TO GALLIPOLLI" PARTY WHO ARE RETURNING TO THE SCENE OF THE GREAT BATTLE WHICH TOOK PLACE IN TURKEY 50 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH.

    SIR RAYMOND HEWISH, VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE AUSTRALIAN "RETURNED SOLDIERS-SAILORS-AIRMEN LEAGUE", ESCORTED BY A GREEK OFFICER, LAID A WREATH ON BEHALF OF THE MEN.

    (IT WAS ON APRIL 25TH 1915 WHEN BRITISH, COMMONWEALTH AND FRENCH TROOPS MOUNTED THE GALLIPOLLI CAMPAIGN.THEY LANDED ON THE TURKISH PENINSULA WHICH GUARDS THE DARDANELLES AND IMMEDIATELY CAME UNDER HEAVY ATTACK.HEAVY LOSSES WERE SUFFERED BEFORE EVEN A FOOTHOLD WAS ESTABLISHED.THE CAMPAIGN ON LAND LASTED FOR EIGHT MONTHS AND ENDED IN THE COMPLETE WITHDRAWAL OF THE INVADING FORCES.TOTAL CASUALTIES WERE AT LEAST HALF A MILLION MEN.
