INTRO: The Olympic Games resumed in Munich ,West Germany on Wednesday (6 September)
following the killing of 11 members of the Israeli team the previous night.Nine of the
team members were killed at Munich's Fuerstenfeldbruck airport, where police fought
a gun battle with Arab guerillas who had kidnapped the Israelis. The guerillas , members
of the Black September organisation, killed the Israelis by blowing up the helicopter that
had carried them from the Olympic village where they had been held hostages for almost
nineteen hours .Three members of the eight man terrorist group were captured after
the battle, and one was interrogated at the scene by police. Two of the surviving terrorists
were said to be seriously wounded , five guerillas and a West German policeman
were killed in the police gun battle with the terrorists.

STORY: After conflicting reports throughout the evening, the Bavarian Interior Minister
Bruno Mark announced to an early Wednesday morning press conference that the Israeli
team members had been killed, and said that at least one of the terrorists had been
    employed at the Olympic grounds.

In the morning rescuers were still working around the helicopters that had been the
death trap for the Israelis. When the police had opened fire one of the guerillas had
hurled a grenade into the helicopter with the hostages on board,The massacre
followed a day of tense negotiations between the guerillas and the West German
    authorities.

Later in the morning a memorial service was held for the Israelis in the vast Olympic
Stadium. The Olympic flag and flags of the world stood at half mast, and the
remaining Israeli athletes were heavily guarded.Twenty five hundred athletes
were ranked in the arena with 80,000 spectators including royal figures and
    statesmen filling the stands.

Mr Avery Brundage , President of the Olympic's declared that " we cannot allow
a handful of terrorists to destroy this nucleus of international cooperation and
goodwill we have in the Olympic movement." He said that after a
period of mourning, the Games would continue.

But, even as the memorial service was being held, members of several Arab teams
were making preparations to return home. The Egyptian and Syrian teams both left
Munich later in the day on a special Egyptian aircraft sent to Munich to bring the
    athletes back.
