    A MASSIVE MAY DAY DISPLAY IN THE BLACK STAR SQUARE IN ACCRA ON SATURDAY WAS ATTENDED BY PRESIDENT NKRUMAH AND HIS FAMILY. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT THE COUNTRY HAD CELEBRATED THIS INTERNATIONAL LABOUR FESTIVAL.

    THE DAY WAS A PUBLIC HOLIDAY IN GHANA. IN THE SQUARE, THOUSANDS OF ONLOOKERS CHEERED AS PRESIDENT NKRUMAH AND HIS FAMILY ARRIVED IN A MOTORCADE.

    ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE CROWD CAME WHEN THE PRESIDENT'S YOUNG SON, GORKEY, PRESENTED HIS FATHER WITH A NEW ORDER - THE STAR OF LABOUR - INSTITUTED RECENTLY FOR WORKERS OF EXCEPTIONAL MERIT.

    THEN THE PRESIDENT PRESENTED THE ORDER TO FOUR OFFICIALS, IN RECOGNITION OF THE SERVICES TO THE NATION. THOSE DECORATED WERE: MR. KODWO ADDISON, MR. J.K. AMPAH, MR. F. TACHIE-MENSON, HOUSING MINISTER AND MR. JOHN TETTEGAH, SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE ALL AFRICAN TRADE UNION FEDERATION.

    LATER THE PRESIDENT WATCHED A MARCH PAST BY THOUSANDS OF WORKERS HEADED BY UNITS OF THE WORKERS' BRIGADE.
