  • Description

This is the first film of a Russian transport plane landing in Brazzaville, capital of the People's Republic of the Congo, with supplies for the Marxist Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) in the Angolan civil war.

The plane is an Antonov An-22 long range heavy transport.

The Russians had been using this airfield for some time, to reinforce MPLA forces fighting the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA) in the north.

The main unloading point used by the Russians is the seaport, and MPLA capital, Luanda.

Meanwhile, the MPLA has claimed fresh victories over both the FNLA, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), in the south.

In radio broadcasts from Luanda, the MPLA said it had taken the UNITA capital of Huambo, formerly Nova Lisboa, and that it had gained control of Santo Antonio Do Zaire, the FNLA's last stronghold in the north.

South African troops have been helping UNITA and it is alleged that money from the United States is being used to arm the FNLA and UNITA.
