  • Description

A SPANISH CARAVELLE JET-AIRLINER CRASHED INTO A WOODED HILLSIDE IN SUSSEX 40 MILES FROM LONDON LAST NIGHT - KILLING ALL 37 PASSENGERS AND CREW. THE AIRCRAFT, BELONGING TO IBERIA AIRLINES, WAS ON A DIRECT FLIGHT FROM MALAGA, SPAIN, TO LONDON.

PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATIONS SHOW THAT THERE MAY HAVE BEEN AN EXPLOSION ON BOARD BEFORE THE CRASH.

THE CARAVELLE HIT A FARMHOUSE AND SLICED THROUGH TOWERING PINE TREES INTO A RIDGE AT BLACK DOWN, 40 MILES SOUTH WEST OF LONDON. THE DISASTER HAPPENED EIGHT MINUTES BEFORE THE AIRLINER WAS DUE TO TOUCH DOWN AT HEATHROW AIRPORT. THE AIRCRAFT HAD AN ALL-SPANISH CREW OF SEVEN AND 30 PASSENGERS, 25 OF WHOM WERE BRITISH.

MORE THAN 100 POLICEMEN AND SEVERAL FIRE BRIGADES, USING FLOODLIGHTS, SEARCHED THE HILLSIDE FOR THREE HOURS IN THE HOPE OF FINDING SURVIVORS. A SPOKESMAN FOR IBERIA SAID THAT THE AIRLINER DISAPPEARED FROM THE RADAR SCREEN WHEN IT WAS FLYING AT 14,500 FEET (4,400 METRES) AND EIGHT MINUTES FROM TOUCHDOWN AT HEATHROW.
