  • Description

A SMALL ARMED DETACHMENT FROM THE MEXICAN ARMY HAS BEEN PUT ON GUARD AT MEXICO CITY'S MOST FAMOUS TOURIST ATTRACTION FOR THE DURATION OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES. THEY ARE WATCHING OVER THE ANCIENT PYRAMIDS OF TEOTIHUACAN, 25 MILES (40 KMS) NORTH, OF MEXICO CITY.

THE PYRAMIDS FORM A GHOST-LIKE CITY, FOUNDED BY THE TOLTECS IN 300 A.D., WHICH IS ONE OF THE MAJOR ATTRACTIONS FOR VISITORS TO THE GAMES, INCLUDING ATHLETES. THE AZTECS, WHO CONQUERED THE TOLTECS, FURTHER DEVELOPED THE ORIGINAL SITE WHICH TODAY CONSISTS OF THE HUGE PYRAMID OF THE SUN, THE SLIGHTLY SMALLER PYRAMID OF THE MOON, AND THE TOLTEC CITADEL WITH ITS PRESERVED AND PARTY-EXCAVATED TEMPLE.

THE CITADEL AND THE PYRAMID OF THE MOON ARE LINKED BY WHAT IS KNOWN AS "THE WAY OF DEATH". IT WAS ALONG THIS WAY THAT THOUSANDS OF WAR PRISONERS WALKED TO THEIR FINAL FATE IN A GRISLY CEREMONY PERFORMED BY PRIESTS. THE PRISONERS' LIVING HEARTS WERE TORN FROM THEIR BODIES AND OFFERED AS A SACRIFICE TO THE GODS.
