    AN ANTI- GOVERNMENT RALLY IN ONE OF THE MAIN SQUARES OF ATHENS LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY) ATTRACTED A CROWD OF ESTIMATED AT 120,000. IT WAS CALLED BY THE CENTRE UNION COALITION OF PARTIES DRAWN FROM THE OPPOSITION.

    TEN THOUSAND POLICE STOOD BY, BUT THE RALLY WAS FREE OF INCIDENT. BESIDES THE POLICE CERTAIN ARMY UNITS WERE ALSO ALERTED TO QUELL DISTURBANCES.

    CENTRE UNION LEADER, GEORGE PAPANDREOU, DENOUNCED THE PIPINELIS GOVERNMENT FOR WHAT HE SAID WAS "SUBMISSION" TO KARAMANLIS, THE FORMER PREMIER WHO RESIGNED FOLLOWING DIFFERENCES WITH THE ROYAL FAMILY OVER THEIR PLANNED VISIT TO LONDON.

    PAPANDREOU SAID IF PIPINELIS DID NOT RESIGN THE CENTRE UNION WOULD BOYCOTT THE GENERAL ELECTION. HE CALLED FOR FREE ELECTIONS, DIVORCED FROM TERRORISM AND INTIMIDATION.

    SLOGANS SHOUTED AT THE RALLY INCLUDED THE CRIES OF "DOWN WITH PIPINELIS:, "DOWN WITH MURDERERS" AND "DEMOCRACY WILL WIN".
