  • Description

Scotsman Jackie Stewart led from start to finish in the 29th Monaco Formula One Grand Prix, in Monte Carlo on Sunday (23 May). Driving a dark blue Tyrell Ford, Stewart jumped into the lead and opened up a gap of one and a half seconds after only tow laps. Breaking the lap record three times, he finally lowered the record to one minute 22.2 seconds, a full second faster than the record set last year by the late Jochen Rindt.

Second place went to Sweden's Ronnie Peterson in a March, with Jacky Ickx of Belgium placing third in a Ferrari.

Former World Champion Stewart is now well in the lead for this year's driving championship, with 24 points in three races.
