    The new and now more numerous Lebanese Parliament met for the first time in Beirut, July 18, to elect a Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies.

    All 99 deputies were present and all voted. Mr Sabri Hamede was elected, receiving 66 votes to the 33 for the other candidate, Mr Adel Osseirane. Mr Hamede had held the office on previous occasions, including the period preceding the recent election.

    Notable politicians present included former Lebanon President Chamoun.
