  • Description

50,000 people crowded the Scouts' Ground - Baghdad's main sports stadium- for a mass rally organised by the National Union Front - the amalgam of Iraqi political parties- to commemorate the 1948 uprising - the Palestinian War- Jan 27.

There were huge portraits of the Iraqi Premier - Maj-Gen. Abdul Jarim Kassim- in the stadium and hundreds of banners with slogans supporting Arab Unity, the Algerian and Oman rebels, Kassim, the new Iraqi regime, and denouncing Zionism and imperialism.

Prominent members of the National Union Front spoke to the crowd and Sayid al-Jawahiri, a leading Iraqi poet, read one of his poems about the uprising, his brother - who was killed during the fighting- and the new Government.

In a resolution passed at the end of this three-hour long-rally, the crowd affirmed its support for Arab-Kurdish unity, its solidarity with the Algerian, Oman and Aden nationalists, its determination for positive neutralism and demanded the withdrawal of Iraq from the Baghdad Pat - "the basis of intrigue against Arab Nationalism."
