Background: Iranian students burnt effigies of US President Ronald Reagan, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev in street demonstrations in the Philippines capital of Manila on June 8. The students, members of a Filipino Moslem Community, chanted anti-imperialist slogans, berating Mr. Begin as "a puppet of the Reagan administration" and depicting him in short pants. The effigy of President Reagan was clothed in cowboy gear and President Brezhnev's effigy was dressed in military fatigues. As the students marched through the streets of Manila's Quiapo district, they handed out pamphlets to passers-by. The march was planned to increase support from Filipino Moslems for the Iranian opposition to the United States, Iraq and Israel.
