  • Description

Man has long dreamed of flying, Despite modern technology -- which has put man on the moon -- one field of aviation remains almost unconquered. But enthusiasts all over the world are trying to break this barrier -- by flying a machine on nothing but man-power.

Gliders don't count, for they need air current to carry them, and are usually towed up anyway. Under the rules to qualify for an international prize of GBP10,000 (sterling), a machine must take off and fly a figure-of-eight course non-stop purely on man-power -- and that means muscle-power. For the only way to do it is fit a propeller powered by chains driven by a man -- or woman -- using a chain drive similar to those on bicycles.
