Background: Thousands of Africans stage strike in the Rhodesian cities of Bulawayo and Gwelo yesterday (Monday). Many of them said they had been threatened by African nationalists.

In Bulawayo, the country's main industrial centre, thousands of Africans stayed away from work after groups of nationalists toured nearby African townships urging a general strike. Nationalists formed pickets to bar workers leaving for the city and in one incident a bus was badly damaged despite police escorts.

The stoppages were the first large-scale responses by Africans to calls for a general strike since Mr. Ian Smith's rebel government seized independence from Britain 12 days ago. In Gwelo, 100 miles (160 km) north of Bulawayo, police went to factories after Africans said they had been threatened with beatings if they disobeyed strikes.

Last night saw the most fierce outbreak of violence since UDI was declared when desperate police measures had to be used in Bulawayo to control thousands of Africans who rioted in the streets of the city and the nearby township of Mpopoma.
