    INDIA'S PRIME MINISTER, MRS. INDIRA GANDHI YESTERDAY (MONDAY) OFFICIALLY OPENED HER COUNTRY'S FIRST NUCLEAR POWER STATION AT TARAPUR, ABOUT 62 MILES (100 KMS) FROM BOMBAY.

    CAPABLE OF PRODUCING 400,000 KILO WATTS, THE STATION IS THE LARGEST IN THE EAST.

    MORE THAN, 6,500 MEN WERE ENGAGED ON THE PROJECT WHICH TOOK ABOUT FIVE YEARS TO COMPLETE. THE NEW POWER STATION WILL MEAN AN INCREASE IN HEAVY INDUSTRY AROUND TARAPUR AND A RISE IN EMPLOYMENT. AGRICULTURE HAS ALSO BENEFITED ... FARMERS ARE NOW ABLE TO PUMP-SETS TO IRRIGATE THEIR LAND AND IT IS ALSO PLANNED TO USE THE PLANT TO PURIFY SEA WATER FOR DRINKING AND IRRIGATION.

    THE NUCLEAR STATION IS SAID TO BE AMONG THE MOST MODERN IN THE WORLD AND TO INCORPORATE THE MOST ADVANCED DEVELOPMENTS IN AMERICAN NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY. ITS NUCLEAR SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED BY LEADING AMERICAN FIRMS AND INSTALLED BY INDIAN AND UNITED STATES' TECHNICIANS.

    EXTRAORDINARY METHODS HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO MAKE SURE THERE IS NO DANGER TO WORKERS OR FARMERS IN THE NEIGHBOURING AREA.
