The nationally televised traditional ceremony took place at Jerusalem's Mt. Herzl, with the Speaker of the Knesset (Parliament), Mr. Shamir, the central personality. Israel's birthday this year stands under the sign of "Those who fought for the founding of the State"; thus the twelve torches, originally representing the 12 tribes of Israel, were lit by relatives of three generations of defenders and fighters: The granddaughter of Nahum Horowitz of "H ashomer" fame (earliest Jewish self-defence unit), Talli Horowitz lit beacon #1, #2 symbolising the Tower & Stockade period was lit by Zohar Friedman, #3 symbolising the Hagana (self-defence underground) was lit by Eilat Golomb, granddaughter of the first Haganah commander, #4 represented the IZL with Noah Na'or lighting, whilst Israel Arad lit #5 for the anti-Nazi fighters; #6 was lit by Lehi (Sterngroup)leader Yair Stern's grandson Shai Stern and Onit Otoling lit the beacon #7 for the fallen in the British army; #8 f??? those of the Palmach was lit by Galila Sefarim, granddaughter of Palmach commander Yitzhak Sadeh, whilst Gur Hillel's 9th beacon represented 'illegal' immigration. #10 was lit by Semadar Rafael in honour of volunteers from abroad and Irit Cohen, the daughter of Eli Cohen, hanged in Damascus as an Israeli spy it the 11th beacon in memory of Israeli martyrs. The last and 12th flame was lit by Ran Dori, grandson of Israel's first CofS, Lt.Gen. Yaacov Dori, thus representing the IDF. The central flame was lit by the Knesset Speaker. Yitzhak Shamir. The ceremony was concluded by the Air Force Command handing over IDF Colours to a contingent of the Gadna (youth battalion) command. The fireworks over Jerusalem gave the sign for merrymaking all over Israel.
