KING HUSSEIN: "Israel's political leaders have said different things at different times, often contradictory. While they have repeatedly stated they will enter into negotiations with no prior conditions, they have also just as repeatedly said they will not negotiate over Arab Jerusalem, which they annexed illegally after the Six-Day War. If they hold irrevocably to this view, peace in Jerusalem -- peace in the Middle East -- is impossible. Israel would do well to reconsider its concept of security. In 1974 Israel held in occupation ten times the land she held before the June was of 1967....and lost ten times as many men. How long can she afford that kind of security at so high a price?"

Background: King Hussein of Jordan has said there will not be peace in the Middle East until Israel is ready to negotiate over Jerusalem. At a National Press Club luncheon in Washington on Friday (15 March), King Hussein said Jerusalem had been 'annexed illegally after the Six-Day War'. The Jordanian monarch has been visiting the United States for talks with President Nixon, Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger and Defence Secretary James Schlesinger. At the luncheon he also accused Israeli leaders of being contradictory in their statements over their willingness to negotiate with the Arabs.

Washington press reports the previous day said the United States had promised to speed up delivery of 20 supersonic jet fighters to Jordan, and to set up an improved air defence system in Jordan.
