Background: The service module for the first manned Apollo flight was installed in a test and assembly structure at the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida on August 19. The service module is that portion of the Apollo spacecraft immediately behind the manned capsule.
The service module contains one of the four main power sources for the flight, carrying a rocket motor as well as a variety of power supply, guidance and other equipment. Below it in the assembled launch vehicle, will be a Saturn IVB second stage and a Saturn IB booster.
The first manned Apollo flight is scheduled for November of this year. There have already been two unmanned flights and a third is set for next week. While the service module is being tests at the Space Center, the rest of the launch vehicle is being completed in Downey, California on the U.S. West Coast. It will shortly be shipped to the space center on the East Coast.
The first manned flight with the three-man Apollo capsule will be an orbital flight. The crew selected is:
Virgil "Gus" Grissom, command pilot, who flew the first Mercury one-man capsule around the earth and flew on the first Gemini mission;
Edward White, who made the first U.s. Space Walk; and rookie astronaut, Roger Chafee
Eventually the United States plans to send an Apollo capsule to the moon.
