  • Description

At least 70 people were killed and another 150 injured when left-wing Nasserite and Palestinian gunmen launched fierce attacks on right-wing Falangist held positions in Beirut on Wednesday (14 January).

The attacks came after right-wing forces had raised a Palestinian refugee camp on the coast, six miles north of Beirut.

About 45 refugees were killed in what a Palestinian spokesman described as a "massacre of killing, burning and looting."
A Falangist spokesman said the camp had been hit because of "infiltration by aliens".

The leftist counter-attacks came in waves of hundreds. Groups of gunmen started from various points around the strife-torn city and drove towards the sea ...zooming to cut off rightist positions to the west of a zig-zag "partitions line" running through Beirut.

Their objective was the port area where warehouses, that have been hit by rockets and mortar bombs, have been burning for several days.

However, the drive was cut short and exchanges of heavy weapon fire kept the two factions at stalemate until night fall when the fighting tapered off.
