    HALF-A-MILLION FOLLOWERS OF THE HINDU RELIGION OBSERVED THE IMPORTANT SHIVARATI FESTIVAL IN KATHMANDU ON FRIDAY (MARCH 6).

    THE FESTIVAL IS HELD EVERY YEAR TO HONOUR THE BIRTH OF LORD SHIVA-A HINDU GOD WHO DENOUNCED ALL WORLDLY PLEASURES.

    PILGRIMS HAD TRAVELLED TO KATHMANDU FROM INDIA, CEYLON AND OUTLYING AREAS OF NEPAL. MANY HAD WALKED FOR MONTHS FROM HARDWAR IN NORTHERN INDIA CARRYING HOLY WATER FROM THE SACRED GANGES RIVER. THE WATER WAS TO BE POURED OVER A STATUE OF LORD SHIVA.

    THE BEAUTIFUL TEMPLE OF PASHUPATI NATH-FOCAL POINT OF THE FESTIVAL-WAS VISITED BY MEMBERS OF THE NEPALESE ROYAL FAMILY.

    THE PREVIOUS EVENING MANY ATTENDING THE FESTIVAL HAD KEPT AN ALL-NIGHT VIGIL AT THE TEMPLE, RECITING HYMNS. ON FRIDAY WORSHIPPERS OFFERED RICE, FLOUR AND OTHER FOOD TO LORD SHIVA'S STATUE. THE PILGRIMS ALSO BATHED IN THE BAGMATI RIVER IN KATHMANDU.

    THOUSANDS THRONGED THE MARKETPLACE AT KATHMANDU, CAPITAL OF NEPAL. THE NEPALESE GOVERNMENT DISTRIBUTED FOOD TO MANY OF THE VISITORS, INCLUDING A NUMBER OF HOLY MEN.
