    A SYMPOSIUM WAS HELD IN ACCRA RECENTLY TO DISCUSS GHANIAN WOMEN'S RIGHTS. CHAIRMAN OF THE SYMPOSIUM, ORGANISED BY THE COMMITTEE ON THE STATUS OF GHANIAN WOMEN, WAS MR. ARCHIE CASELY HAYFORD, AN ACCRA LAWYER.

    THE SYMPOSIUM STRESSED THE NEED FOR PROPER EDUCATION FOR GHANIAN WOMEN AND THE NEED FOR THEM TO EXERCISE THEIR RIGHTS IN SOCIETY.

    ONE OF THE FOUR MEMBERS OF THE PANEL WAS MR. MICHAEL BOYE-ANAWOMAH DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMES OF THE CENTRE FOR CIVIC EDUCATION, WHO TOLD THE ASSEMBLED WOMEN THAT THEY WERE POTENTIALLY MORE POWERFUL THAN THEY REALISED.

    THE CHIEF NURSING OFFICER, MISS DOCEA KISSEIH, CALLED FOR THE ENFORCEMENT OF CRIMINAL LEGISLATION MAKING IT AN OFFENSE FOR MEN TO NEGLECT THEIR CHILDREN. SHE ALSO APPEALED TO WOMEN'S ORGANISATIONS IN GHANA TO EDUCATE WOMEN ON FAMILY PLANNING.

    THE SYMPOSIUM WAS ORGANISED AS PART OF THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS OF THE ADOPTION AND PROCLAMATION OF THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS BY THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
