Background: South African veteran light-heavyweight Pierre Fourie scored a points victory over Mike Quarry of the United States in a ten-round fight in Johannesburg, South African on Saturday (2nd March).

The 30-year-old Fourie was once the number one contender for the World Light Heavyweight crown until he was beaten by World Champion Bob Foster in a points decision over 15 rounds. Fourie claimed after that fight that he could not cope with the Champion's extraordinary build and reach advantage. However, he had no such problem with Mike Quarry when they met at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

In front of a crowd of 12,000 Fourie dominated the fight until the last round when he was blinded by blood streaming from a gash over his left eye. Quarry was warned by the referee about head-butting after the incident in which the South African's eyebrow was split. There were no knockdowns in the match although Fourie did go down on one occasion....but this was ruled a slip by the referee.

At the end of ten rounds the judges clearly awarded the fight to Fourie. Quarry, however, left the ring immediately he heard the decision and later claimed that the result was a "shocker". The 24-year-old Quarry who has been in and out of the World-ratings list in the last year was hurt by several bruising rights from the South African, but never looked in danger of being knocked down. It was Fourie's more consistent punching and his aggression in the clinches that won him eight and nine out of the ten rounds on the judges' points cards.

A veteran of South African boxing. Fourie is now pressing for a third attempt on the World Light-Heavyweight Title.
