SENATORS VOTED 92 - 5 FOR THE CENSURE VOTE, ONLY THE SIXTH TIME THAT SUCH SEVERE DISCIPLINARY ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN AGAINST A MEMBER IN THE SENATE'S 200-YEAR HISTORY.

    BY ITS VOTE, THE SENATE FOUND THE 60-YEAR-OLD LAWYER GUILTY OF CONVERTING 116,000 DOLLARS US (ABOUT GBP41,000 STERLING) IN POLITICAL CAMPAIGN FUNDS TO PRIVATE USES. INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE CHARGES HAD TAKEN 14 MONTHS.

    SENATOR DODD PROCLAIMED HIS INNOCENCE TO THE END, AND SAID HE MUST RUN AGAIN FOR OFFICE TO VINDICATE HIMSELF.
