  • Description

Rallies, strikes and clashes between police and militant students have erupted across Japan in protest against the Government's decision to maintain its security pact with the United States.

The Japan-U.S. security treaty, which caused riots when first signed in 1960, was automatically extended for a year after the original ten year pact expired at midnight on Monday (June 22).

More than 200-thousand demonstrators attended a rally in Tokyo's Yoyogi Park organised by the Japan Socialist Party and the Japan Communist Party, to oppose the treaty. The rally was said to be the largest in Tokyo's history. A march followed the rally, which was colourful and noisy but mainly peaceful. However, more than 20-thousand riot police backed by water cannon and armoured vans guarded the lines of the march in case rioting broke out.

In scattered incidents across the nation more than 600 demonstrators have been arrested as a result of protests against the extension of the treaty. The National Railway Workers Union members staged a sit down strike despite Government ruling against this, and more than 500 police were mobilised to stamp out the strike. 92 people including railway workers and some students agitators were arrested.

At Tokyo university more than 500 students assembled in the campus to voice their stand for abolition of the treaty.

Thousands of helmeted, stone and bottle throwing students later smashed their way to within yards of the heavily guarded American Embassy and the home of Prime Minister Sato before falling back in the face of police tear gas. The scenes recalled the rioting of 1960 when a girl student was trampled to death in a similar attack on the parliament building.
